This is my new favorite band. Please check them out. They feature Holly Nelson on vocals, John Hertzberg on keyboards and programming, Herb Grimaud (Sound Gallery) on bass, and Campuzano (CUSH, The Lassie Foundation, CVSC) on guitar. Additional support by Dylan Hake and Jesse Nason. Also, all artwork for the Stranger Kings is by Brett LTD.

Hmm...
Table Topics:
CUSH-Who in the hell knows... As mentioned before Andrew and I have multiple jams ready to go. We just need a vocalist. Last night I got a suprise in my email; a scratch vocal and some bgv's on one of our songs. It sounded great. Hopefully before the end of the Mayan calendar we can share it with you. Tentative title "Always Disapper".
The Lassie Foundation-Who in the hell knows... We are still in haiatus.
CVSC-Kevin and I plan getting together within the next year to finish some more songs.
Stranger Kings-A new project that I started with Herb Grimaud, John Hertzberg, and Holly Nelson. We have started recording a song that should be available for release in the next month or so. What does it sound like? Well I think that it sounds like the shit!
Hello friends! First of all we are so sorry for the lack of posts. We hope you all enjoyed the holidays and are having a good year so far.
We are happy to announce our first single is available here at Northern. This song has been a long time coming and we are stoked at its final results. Hopefully y'all will dig it. Currently we are working on some other jams and hopefully we won't fall victim to our own laziness and get some more music out to you sooner than later.
Just wanted to say thanks to Northern for the time to record this. Also, thanks to Andrew Prickett for his time mixing, mastering, and producing it.
thanks,
cupie and kevin

The first incarnation of NorthernTV is now playing. We have some lofty aspirations for what NorthernTV can become but we have decided to bring you what can best be described as version 0.0. This version is not the HD channel full of compelling content that we hope to bring you in the future, but we think it is a good place, and time, to start. Check out some videos by Northern Records artists, both past and present, along with some other video from across the web that we will be adding in the coming days. Thanks for your patience.
There were created a series of children's books chronicling the adventures of a boy named Dick and a girl named Jane. The purpose of these stories was to introduce infant man to the knowledge of words. This was very dangerous. This was man creating fire! For words lead to thoughts, and thoughts to independence. Freewill, not from an apple, but from a collection of stories for children. Inspired by this particular metaphorical apple, Telegram has released the first 3 song installment, entitled "We Look And See" in a trilogy of 3P's, eventually escalating into what will be called Futuro. The goal and theme in mind behind We Look And See was to try to capture the wonderment of childhood, the awe of those early years. There are moments of excitement and brief spells of terror, but overall we tried to keep things in a state of sonic adventure and childlike curiosity. This is the first step for Telegram. Things might get a little scary from here on out. But if you don't mind the ride, we promise to do our best to keep things interesting. Try to hold on tight.
Don't panic now.
thanks for listening,
Nick

Almost 2 years ago, I was introduced to a guy named Nick, who had a very compelling voice and wrote some great songs. Not to mention he was/is a fellow Star Wars nut. Instant love, and we've been working on stuff since then, fighting all obstacles man-made (self-made) and otherwise. We have released 3 songs, the first of a triology of 3P's, called "We Look And See". It is a great pleasure to work with Nick, and the icing on the cake for me personally is that I got to play a whole lot of guitar and bass on it as well. Yay for delay pedals!
"Who You Are" is the oldest song, and went through a few versions. Tracked, retracked. Sung, resung. Its one of those songs that hit me as a 'classic' on the first listen. Beautiful.
"Planet Emily" arrived this summer, and got remolded a bit by Barrett Slagle when he mixed it. Thanks to power of modern technology, it got a much needed kick in the pants.
"Sleeping In" came very recently, and blew me away. Fast, loud, and a great melody. And fuzz guitar. Yay for fuzz guitar!
More on the way.

Made the trek up north to spend Thanksgiving with the relatives in Vancouver. Shame I'm not much of a "Twilight" fanatic. If I were, my brain would undoubtably be in overload at the moment. Thanks to the new film, Vancouver has now become the Vampire capitol of the world. I wonder what Mr Stoker would think of all this..
Still, it's quite a lovely location, nice and wet.
Perfect for writing those sad-morbid-melancholy-depressing, songs and stories. Maybe I understand the appeal...for those blood-suckers that is...
Late last night i went down to Northern's studio to work on some songs only to be hijacked by Telegram/Nick recording a piece music that i can only define as art. As a rule, of my own, i generally don't consider most music, including my own, art. What i heard last night was art and it was humbling, exciting, beautiful, confident, and very frustrating. What Nick and Andrew were working on was beautiful and special. It was frustrating because it was an uncomfortable reminder that there is no grace given to those who are lazy in Rock n Roll. The lazy fail.

PacTour Battle Of The Bands
One lucky son-of-a-band will open for SAOSIN on the PacTour and have the chance to perform on Fuel TV. Check out Set To Sea's entry in the PacTour Battle of The Bands contest.
Here I am. Is anybody out there? Can anyone hear me?...nothing. Day after day it's been the same response for weeks, months, years maybe. I've lost track. Time doesn't pass in space. Sure I have complicated instruments that will let me know exactly how long I've been out here. But it doesn't mean anything. There's no sun to judge help judge the time, no birds to sing in the day, no flowers to signal the seasons. What I would give to feel that sweet assurance gravity offers, that stability. I miss the feeling of home, knowing this is where I belong. All I have now is endless floating. This space craft is my home. At first the idea was so intriguing, exploring, finding things that no one has ever seen before. Yes, "where no man has gone before." That romance captured me, enticed me into the emptiness that is here. Where? I couldn't tell you, somewhere far beyond the sun. How I miss its warmth.
New Music!
A couple of weeks ago, Telegram posted the song "Who You Are" on their Northernworld page. We have been working on this song for quite some time, and it has gone through many variations. In the form which has been posted, it includes yours truly on lead guitar and bass, Dylan on drums, Tysen on rhodes, and Nick playing guitar and singing (and creating the 'space' sounds). The basics of drums, bass and rhythm guitar were tracked live together at Northern, and then a long period of varying overdubs, start overs and redos commenced. It's a favorite of mine, and I hope you enjoy it as well.
This week, we have the first song from Leslie DuPre Grimaud, a track called "Raven's Song". I had the privilege of playing guitar on this song as well, and even managed to squeek in the last minute use of my Convulsion Fuzz. Eric and I have known Leslie, and her husband (some guy named Herb) for years and years. Among other things, she fronted the only legit darkwave band in the early days of the SoCal scene, and added the hauntingly beautiful vocals to "58" and "Never Enough" by the Prayer Chain. She has hundreds of amazing songs, waiting to go, which I look forward to being a part of.
So, finally, new music. More to come, sooner rather than later.
The Music Business is evolving. Thankfully. While some people are frightened by this, others are embracing it and charging forward. I count myself in the latter party.
These are the sites I follow in my Google Reader. I highly suggest them to all who are interested in how, why and where da 'biz' iz going.
Ignore at your own risk.

hot Hey Everyone! Hope you are all enjoying your summer. Well it has been awhile since we filled you in on what is going on with us. First, the record is almost finished being recorded. We have about 3 more songs that Jake has to do vocals on and a little bit more of overdubs and it is off to be mixed and mastered. We are still working on a title for the record, but it will have 11 songs on it. We can't wait until you guys get to hear it! The goal is to release it sometime in September.
Secondly, we have some sad news. Our long time friend and drummer Amir has decided to leave Set To Sea. It came kind of as a shock, but is really the best thing for all of us. Amir is at a place where he feels lead to pursue different things with his life. We are still good friends and appreciate everything Amir has done for the band and for us personally.
Since Amir's departure, we have been trying out some people. Try outs have been going well. Our good friend Brady will be filling in for most shows right now and Amir will be doing a couple also.
With all that said, we have some shows coming up in August. We would love to see familiar faces and hang with you all! We have missed playing shows like crazy. If you need tickets or just have some questions about the shows please write us on myspace or Email us at wearesettosea@yahoo.com.
Love,
Set To Sea
Time is always short. And its never free.
I run around challenging people to look at their lives and recognize things maybe a bit differently, etc. So, looking at my own life, I have had to face, yet again, the truth that: judging by hours spent, I am in fact not much more than a Music Editor. While I fancy myself a Music Creator, Maker, etc., the facts state otherwise. While I have made some progress in this department, it is still not enough. For me, or, anyone else for that matter.
So, I refuse to let the sadness of this realization slow me down, and in fact intend to charge whole-heartedly through my current work, and fight for a more real-time Creative future.
I don't believe I've mentioned this yet, but if you are a person involved in Music Business on any level, then I highly insist you subscribe to a website called HypeBot. They and a handful of others like them are sailing bravely into the new waters of the undefined future of the 'Music Industry' (a term which has taken on an even more oxymoronic meaning in the last few years). It'll be worth your time, for sure.
So, yeah, last week was pretty crazy and fun. Spent 5 very long days/nights at eastwest studios, in studio 2. The band (who are going to change their name) is a 4-piece rock band, with the singer playing guitar/keys. So I just set up everything like I do at Northern; put the drums in the middle, and the guitar amps on either side like they were set up for a show. There was an iso booth for the bass, so that's where his rig went.
We used a combo of everyone's gear and some rented stuff (mostly drums). They played the songs down live while we worked 'em out, and then we recorded them with as many people playing at once as possible, to maintain that feel. "DownTown" Drew Brown was the positive-reinforcement Producer, I pitched in my 2.5 cents as well, and Engineered with help from Mimi. Drew's friend Frenchie came by every day and made us some outstanding food, which was amazing.
The board we tracked through was a dream: Class A Neve, with all 1073 mic pres. The mic collection was a dream. The sound of the performance room was a dream. Basically, it was pretty easy to get great sounds. Two sets of room mics on the drums gave us a small-room/big-room option. They were a pair of Neumann U47's and M50's. Awesome.
The vocalist/guitarist used the Bassman/Marshall rig provided by yours truly, while the lead guitarist used my AC30 and Drew's Matchless Chieftan. The bass setup was a combo of their Ampeg SVT rig, and my little Fender Pro Jr. through the Silver "White Sands" cab that has a 15" speaker in it. Drums were performed by some guy they called "Nards", who used to play in some band that screams and makes noise called 'Fear Before'.
On Saturday, we didn't have much left except for some background vocals, so we moved to Paramount studio B. There, we happened to be able to use the EXACT MIC that Michael Jackson recorded Thriller with. THE mic. So, that was fun. The assistant there had lots of interesting stories as well. Studio C is where they recorded Led Zeppelin 2. And it is also supposedly where a young actor was working a carpentery job (re-paneling the walls) in the early/mid 70's when he got the gig as Han Solo in some flick called Star Wars.
All in all, quite a bit of fun.
